BERJAGA-JAGA - Renungan Minggu Advent I (29 November 2020) | Pater Dominggus Mite Kota, SVD

Theological Message: Advent and Vigilance
📌 The reflection marks the First Sunday of Advent (Year B), focusing on the theme of vigilance and preparation for the coming of Christ.
🗣️ Jesus's teaching, as per the Gospel of Mark, urges constant watchfulness ("Be careful and be alert") because the exact time of the Lord's return (or one's own death) is unknown.
🙏 Advent is presented as a time for internal cleansing, urging the faithful to remove negative feelings like pride, anger, and long-held grudges (vengeance) from the "house of the spirit" (the heart).

Parable of the Sleeper and the Servant's Duty
🏠 The parable likens the faithful to servants entrusted with responsibilities while awaiting the master's return, whether at night, midnight, or early dawn.
⌛ Waiting requires patience (derived from the Latin *patior*, meaning "to suffer"), emphasizing that vigilance is not passive waiting but sustained effort.
💼 Being found faithful means actively executing daily duties and responsibilities diligently until the Master returns, contrasting with wasting time criticizing others.

Illustrative Story of Dorus and the Angel of Death
💀 A man named Dorus was visited by the Angel of Death, whose list showed Dorus at the top, scheduled for immediate passing.
💡 Dorus shrewdly invited the Angel in, offered food and drink laced with sleeping powder (available because his wife was a nurse), and successfully delayed his end by rearranging the death list.
📉 Despite his clever maneuver to gain a brief reprieve to see his family, Dorus ultimately died suddenly when the revitalized Angel of Death proceeded down the list, illustrating that shortcuts cannot ultimately avoid the certainty of death.

Key Points & Insights
➡️ The core message is that death is a certainty with an unpredictable arrival; therefore, the wisest course is to stay prepared and vigilant ("berjaga-jaga").
➡️ Preparation involves not just spiritual readiness but also faithfulness in daily tasks and responsibilities, which serves as a primary form of watchfulness.
➡️ Christians are called to keep their inner selves clean and open for God's coming, viewing Advent as a period for spiritual house-cleaning.
➡️ God is faithful (as referenced by Paul's letter to the Corinthians) to His promise of salvation through Jesus Christ, establishing the foundation for this hopeful anticipation.
