IAI Podcast: Akuntan Vs Pajak: Love and Hate Relationship - Christine Tjen

Relationship Between Accounting and Taxation
📌 Tax regulations often reference existing PSAK (Financial Accounting Standards), creating links between accounting and taxation rules, such as in the treatment of foreign exchange differences.
⚖️ While accounting focuses on reporting entity performance based on PSAK, taxation operates under specific tax laws aiming to protect state revenue, necessitating reconciliation.
🔄 Calculating tax requires a fiscal reconciliation starting from the financial statements because accounting and tax rules, though overlapping, have distinct governing objectives.

Career Trajectory and Specialization in Taxation
💡 The speaker initially aimed to be an auditor but transitioned into taxation, finding it challenging and dynamic due to constantly changing Indonesian regulations.
🎓 Specializing in tax forces one to become a specialist, unlike accounting or auditing which can be more generalist roles.
🎓 The speaker pursued an International Tax specialization during Master's studies to deepen expertise in a less saturated field.

The Importance and Scope of Taxation Careers
🌍 Taxation is described as a backbone of the country, with tax revenue currently supporting over 70% of Indonesia's state budget (APBN).
💼 Career paths in tax include tax consultants, in-house tax specialists within companies (handling single or group entities), government roles (policy making), and academia.
🤖 Future tax roles will increasingly involve IT integration, such as analyzing big data and managing systems like the developing Core Tax System (CTAX), requiring both IT and tax knowledge.

Upskilling and Educational Pathways
📚 For those lacking a formal accounting background but interested in tax, options include formal schooling focused on taxation or utilizing IAI programs, such as integrated accounting education (AB dan Terpadu C), which can be accessed both online and offline.
🎓 An accounting background is a significant advantage in tax careers, as foundational knowledge of financial statements is essential for interpreting transactions and justifying positions during tax audits or disputes.
🔍 Accountants with tax knowledge possess a value-added benefit over those who only understand accounting principles.
