"Don't work in the afternoon." Everyone's smartest time is different | Intellectuals' Invitational EP.46 (Professor Kim Kyung-il, Part 1)

Optimizing Productivity Through Cognitive Timing
📌 The first 1.5 to 2 hours after waking up is the period when cognitive function, mental state, and thinking ability are at their peak.
🧠 Deep thinking and decision-making tasks should be scheduled during these peak morning hours for maximum effectiveness.
📊 Information suggests that cognitive scores for "morning-type" individuals peak between 8 AM and 9 AM, while "evening-type" individuals peak later in the afternoon (after 4 PM or 5 PM), with score differences potentially exceeding 10 points.

Overcoming Procrastination and Building Momentum
📌 Procrastination often stems from a lack of a "trigger" or initial action, not inherent laziness; the difficulty lies in starting (e.g., picking up a remote or opening a book).
🪜 Break down daunting tasks using a "stepping stone" approach: focus only on the very first, easiest micro-action (e.g., "Just open the book," not "Study the whole chapter") to gain initial momentum.
🎮 Productivity can be enhanced by "gamifying" tasks; track small achievements (like time taken per section) to create a real-time sense of progress and score, similar to how games maintain engagement.

Goal Setting and Career Adaptation
🎯 Avoid setting long-term goals as nouns (fixed targets) like "I will be a teacher at 35"; instead, frame them as verbs (actions) like "I will be someone who teaches people I don't know."
📉 Setting goals as concrete, quantifiable nouns (e.g., owning a 35-pyeong apartment by age 35) can lead to burnout and feelings of failure if slight deviations occur, as people rely on emotional commitment rather than actionable steps.
🔄 If work becomes tedious after reaching a plateau (the expert stage), seek "job modification" (within the same company) rather than immediate "job change" (resignation) to find new growth avenues safely.

Workplace Culture and Fulfillment
🤝 Employee dissatisfaction often results from a mismatch between personal values and company culture (the "how" of work), not just salary or job title.
📝 Companies should document and share "green papers" (녹서) detailing specific communication protocols and questions asked internally, rather than vague mission statements, to clearly signal their true culture.
💡 Nietzsche suggested maintaining good relationships by promising actions, not emotions; apply this to work by committing to specific behaviors (e.g., "I won't yell in anger") rather than vague emotional promises (e.g., "I will love this company forever").

Key Points & Insights
➡️ Identify your peak cognitive time (morning or evening) and schedule deep thinking and critical decision-making tasks accordingly, reserving routine work for less sharp periods.
➡️ When facing inertia, focus solely on the smallest possible initiating action (the trigger) to overcome the initial hurdle; once started, momentum often takes over.
➡️ To sustain motivation, transform goals into verb-based (action-oriented) objectives rather than noun-based (fixed result) ones, allowing for adaptation and alternative paths.
➡️ Before changing jobs, explore internal role changes (직무 변경) to see if a shift in tasks provides the necessary novelty and growth sensation required to renew engagement.
