Geopolitical Crisis: US Action in Venezuela
📌 The US launched a military operation targeting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who were subsequently detained and flown to New York to face terrorism and narcotics charges.
🇺🇳 The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on January 5th to discuss the US operation, with Somalia presiding over the council for the month of January.
🗣️ The action drew international criticism, though some US protests were also noted; conversely, some Venezuelan citizens were reportedly celebrating the development.

Economic Impacts: Oil Markets and Global Outlook
📉 In the short term, gold futures rose over 1% as investors sought safe-haven assets amid heightened tension.
🛢️ Oil prices showed a tendency to increase upon the reopening of futures trading due to concerns over supply disruptions following the detention of Maduro.
📊 Analysts suggest the medium-term impact on global oil prices may be limited, as existing oversupply and the scale of Venezuelan production (currently around 500,000 barrels per day) are minor factors compared to major producers.

Stock Market Reaction and Investment Outlook
📈 Asia-Pacific stock markets opened strongly, with Japan's Nikkei 225 index rising 2.37% in response to the news from Venezuela.
💰 US stock futures showed slight gains, driven by strength in the chemical and industrial sectors, despite some tech weakness.
⚠️ Analysts warn that the political transition in Venezuela carries risks of instability, though the military operation itself did not damage oil production/refining infrastructure.

Key Points & Insights
➡️ The US justification for intervention, citing drug trafficking, is heavily questioned, as major drug routes to the US originate primarily through Mexico (for Fentanyl) and Colombia (for Cocaine) via land routes.
➡️ The primary drivers for the US intervention are believed to be geopolitics (controlling the US's "backyard") and securing oil resource benefits for American companies, aiming to lower global oil prices to control domestic inflation ahead of elections.
➡️ Long-term recovery for Venezuela's oil production is uncertain, with experts estimating it may take several years due to accumulated decay under previous administrations.
