What is the ideal concentration of plant-available silica recommended based on soil testing?

The speaker suggests that 100 parts per million of Monosilicic acid should be present on a soil test, though levels are often found to be only 20 or 30 ppm.

What is the main proactive function of silica in relation to plant protection?

Silica strengthens the cell wall, creating a physical barrier that hinders fungal pathogens from drilling through to access the cytoplasm and limits the feeding apparatus of sap-sucking insects.

Which two minerals are cited as being equally important for creating or strengthening the plant cell wall?

The two minerals critical for cell wall strength are calcium and silica.

What is the connection between boosting plant immunity and increasing crop yield?

The video states there are zero exceptions: anything that boosts plant immunity—whether microbes or substances like salicylic acid—also boosts yield.

What alternative plant source is used in this Australian preparation in place of horsetail, which is the highest natural source of silica?

In the absence of horsetail, the native Australian tree, the sheoak (*Allocasuarina*), which is sometimes called the horsetail sheoak, is used due to its comparable high silica content.

What is the purpose of the second step, brewing the silica extraction with BAM microbes?

The second step effectively puts the microbes behind the minerals, enhancing the uptake of silica and other beneficial compounds within the mix, providing a double benefit.

Silica in Regenerative Agriculture
📌 Recommended soil testing levels for plant-available silica (Monosilicic acid) is 100 parts per million (ppm), though levels are often found to be significantly lower (20 or 30 ppm).
🌱 Higher plant-available silica levels are often observed in organic/regenerative systems compared to chemical extractive models, suggesting chemicals impact silica-releasing organisms.
🛡️ Silica, alongside calcium, is crucial for strengthening the cell wall, creating a physical barrier against fungal diseases and sap-sucking insects.
💡 Silica acts as a powerful immune elicitor in plants, and boosting plant immunity has been universally shown to increase yield.

Silica Applications and Benefits
💪 A deficiency in silica is a common cause of lodging (falling over) in broadacre crops; application of potassium silicate can provide a rapid stem strength recovery.
🌿 Silica is essential for building the phloem and xylem structures, which are vital for efficient photosynthesis and the translocation of nutrients and moisture throughout the plant.
🔬 Biodynamic Agriculture recognizes silica's importance; Steiner’s preparations (like 501) incorporate very fine silica quartz, and others use horsetail, which is a high silica source.

DIY Biologically Activated Silica Preparation (BD 508 Hybrid)
🌿 In the absence of horsetail, the native Australian tree **Shoke ( *Leptospermum liversidgii*), also called the horsetail shoke due to comparable silica levels, is used for extraction.
🔥 The initial process involves creating a silica tea** by boiling the dried *cerina* material in water for 60 minutes to maximize extraction.
🦠 This silica tea extraction is then combined with water, molasses (10 L), BAM mother culture (10 L), and supplementary additions like kelp/fish hydrolysate and humic acid in a 200 L drum.
🌬️ The mixture is sealed using an anaerobic brewing setup with a one-way valve (bubbler system) to allow CO₂ escape while preventing oxygen ingress, allowing microbes to further decompose and enhance silica uptake over 3-4 weeks.

Key Points & Insights
➡️ The proactive approach to pest and disease control starts with strengthening the plant cell wall using both calcium and silica.
➡️ Boosting plant immunity via silica elicitation is a "win-win scenario" leading to less chemical reliance and higher yields.
➡️ The amplified process (BD 508) effectively puts microbes behind the minerals to enhance the uptake of silica and other beneficial compounds.
