What is the primary purpose of IELTS Speaking Part Three?

Part Three requires candidates to engage in a discussion involving a two-sided argument, often covering opinions, evaluation, or comparison.

What are the five steps of the recommended formula for answering Part Three questions?

The formula is: 1. Direct Answer, 2. Explain Why, 3. Give an Example (optional), 4. Provide an Alternative viewpoint, and 5. Conclude (optional).

What transition phrase should be used when introducing a contrasting or alternative point?

Good ways to introduce an alternative include using "However," "In contrast," or "On the other hand."

How should a candidate respond if they genuinely have no ideas about the topic asked in Part Three?

The speaker advises being honest with the examiner, stating they haven't thought about the topic much but promising to research it in the future, allowing a fluent transition to the next question.

While examples are helpful, candidates should try to avoid always talking about themselves; generalized examples like "In Vietnam" are preferred.

What non-verbal elements should candidates focus on during the speaking exam?

Candidates should focus on body language, using hand movements and facial expressions, and remembering to smile, as smiling can aid pronunciation.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 Answering Formula
📌 The recommended formula for tackling nearly every Part 3 question involves five distinct steps: Answer, Why, Example, Alternative, and Conclusion.
🗣️ Start your answer by using time-buying phrases like "In my opinion" or "From my personal perspective" to directly address the question (e.g., "definitely youngsters" when asked who travels more).
💡 When explaining the "Why," provide one significant reason or two smaller reasons (e.g., youngsters travel to discover new cultures and cuisine).

Structuring Arguments and Examples
🖼️ The Example step is optional but recommended; use generalized examples (e.g., "In Vietnam...") rather than constantly referring to personal experiences.
🔄 Use transition words like "However," "In contrast," or "On the other hand" to introduce the Alternative viewpoint, ensuring a two-sided argument (e.g., contrasting young travelers with elderly travelers who have more time/money).
⏳ Part 3 answers should be longer than Part 1 answers, and concluding with a simple future-tense statement (Step 5) can lengthen shorter responses.

Handling Lack of Ideas and Delivery
🤥 If you genuinely have no immediate ideas for a question, be honest and brief (e.g., "I have never really thought about this topic, but I will do more research").
😊 Focus on natural, fluent delivery and strong body language; move your hands and remember to smile, as smiling can aid pronunciation.
