"If you know just two things, you don't need to spend a fortune on Daechi-dong. Please save time and money." | Elementary and Middle School Math Pre-Learning Roadmap to Grade 1 (Director Kim Hyun-jung)

Mathematics Learning Strategy & Acceleration
📌 In the past, if a student struggled with math, they were always forced to do advanced study (선행), regardless of their current skill level, to build a strong foundation before high school.
📚 The speaker aims for students to complete all prerequisite concepts for middle and high school math before entering high school using a structured roadmap.
📈 Students who kept up with advanced study found high school coursework significantly easier; for example, students who studied ahead found 3-1 middle school exams simple because the material was covered in the advanced common math courses.
🛑 Stopping advanced study because current performance is low creates a vicious cycle, especially when students neglect foundational math during critical periods like the Winter break after 9th grade.

Mastery Levels and Pacing
🚫 Parents often mistakenly demand 100% mastery before moving on, leading to students repeating the same material multiple times, causing boredom and disengagement.
🎯 A general target mastery level should be 70% to move forward; for students with lower math aptitude, even 50% mastery is acceptable initially.
🔄 Mathematics follows a spiral curriculum; concepts missed previously (e.g., 30% missed) will reappear later, requiring remediation during subsequent studies, which is naturally addressed by continuous advancement (선행).

Cultivating Positive Math Attitude (Math Affect)
🧘 Parents must exercise patience and refrain from scolding students for poor focus or incomplete homework, as scolding leads to further avoidance of study.
🌟 Praise for small achievements is crucial; giving a small reward or praise publicly (in front of peers) is highly effective for students who have never experienced how to study effectively.
✍️ The most valuable time is the student's own practice time (holding the pencil and solving problems), not passive observation time.

Core Concepts and Teacher Quality
🍎 The foundation of advanced math success lies in understanding concepts (definition, properties, formulas), not just problem-solving skills; many students confuse weak problem-solving with weak concepts.
📊 The most critical area often overlooked is functions (found at the end of 8-2 and 9-1 materials), which is central to all high school math.
✏️ Accurate graph drawing using graph paper (모눈 종이) is a marker of a good teacher and is essential for mastering functions; poor drawing habits lead to weak mathematical intuition.

Key Points & Insights
➡️ Adopt a clear pacing roadmap that dictates which concepts must be covered by specific times (e.g., Winter break of 9th grade) to ensure preparedness for high school.
➡️ For struggling students, prioritize completing the core concept checks (concept white test) with parents providing support on concept writing, but do not teach the solutions; only check the fidelity of the written concept.
➡️ To build positive engagement, use small rewards and public praise for tiny improvements, especially for students unfamiliar with the process of studying math.
➡️ Accurate graphing using graph paper is non-negotiable for mastering functions, indicating a high standard in instruction.
