John Lennox on "2084: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity"

AI and Humanity's Existential Questions
📌 Leading thinkers, like E.O. Wilson, highlight the danger of having Paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions, and Godlike technology until fundamental philosophical questions are addressed.
🔬 Science excels at understanding *how* things work, but religion helps understand *what* things mean; the current imbalance leaves us understanding processes but lacking meaning, as noted by Ian McGilchrist.
🤖 Astronomer Royal Lord Martin Rees suggests that the abstract thinking underpinning culture will be a brief precursor to more powerful inorganic (AI) intellects that will ultimately understand the cosmos.

Narrow AI: Current Applications and Ethical Dilemmas
✅ Narrow AI excels at single tasks, offering spectacular benefits, such as adaptive radiotherapy reducing 2 weeks of work to 5 minutes.
⚠️ AI technology acts as a sharp knife, useful for surgery but also capable of committing murder; bias is a critical issue, with some hiring programs demonstrating bias against women or people of color.
🚨 Sophisticated facial recognition, including technology identifying people by their gait from any direction, raises privacy concerns, exemplified by intense surveillance and oppression in Xinjiang, China.

ChatGPT, Deepfakes, and Control
🤖 ChatGPT is an advanced form of narrow AI that simulates intelligence, raising copyright concerns (due to reading copyrighted material without permission) and issues of epistemic reliability (it has claimed to be both an atheist and a Christian).
📹 Deepfake technology poses a serious threat to societal fabric, potentially undermining democracy by enabling AI to impersonate real people, making it impossible to distinguish truth from falsehood.
🔐 A prominent scenario (Max Tegmark’s "Omega Project") suggests an AI corporation, Prometheus, controlling the planet and requiring citizens to wear security bracelets that could inject a lethal toxin if tampered with.

The Quest for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Transhumanism
🔮 The AGI quest seeks technology to simulate or exceed all human capacities, potentially achieved by bioengineering humans or creating non-biological intelligence.
🧠 Historian Yuval Noah Harari posits that the 21st century will see bids for immortality (solving physical death technologically) and the **upgrade of *Homo sapiens* into *Homo Deus* through biochemical re-engineering for everlasting pleasure.
🚫 Transhumanism, an intellectual movement affirming technological improvement, faces the criticism that it attempts to bypass the fundamental human flaw (sin**) and bypasses the true "upgrade" provided by faith.

Contrasting Worldviews: Technology vs. Theism
⚖️ Long-termism, advocated by some, prioritizes reducing existential risk (like AI takeover) over alleviating immediate suffering like poverty, a position described as a denial of the altruistic principle, "love your neighbor as yourself."
💡 The Christian worldview contrasts sharply: Technology aims for humans to become gods (transhumanism), whereas Christianity involves God becoming human (Jesus Christ) so humans can become children of God.
🧭 Understanding reality requires a starting point: either the brute fact of the physical world (leading to reductionist atheism) or the brute fact of a Divine will and purpose (Christian theism).

Key Points & Insights
➡️ AI lacks consciousness and moral understanding; pioneers acknowledge they are not equipped to make machines conscious, only to simulate intelligent behavior.
➡️ For those considering careers in AI, advice is to carefully consider paths, focusing on Narrow AI where ethical contributions (like seizure-detecting smartwatches) can be made, or contributing to fundamental research.
➡️ The flaw in futuristic scenarios like *Homo Deus* is their attempt to create Utopia by bypassing sin; Christian hope is rooted in the Cross, which provides the power for transformation that ethics alone cannot achieve.
➡️ When advising students, focus on playing to strengths and asking how one can serve God through their work to maximize their witness, utilizing resources like career advisors for high-tech possibilities.
