La battaglia di Azio; con Alessandro Barbero - Passato e Presente (Rai3, 29 gennaio 2018)

The Significance of the Battle of Actium (31 BC)
📌 The battle was the final confrontation between Octavian (future Augustus) and Mark Antony/Cleopatra, representing a clash between the Western Roman elite and the Hellenistic/Eastern power structure.
🏛️ Had Antony won, the Roman Empire might have evolved into a Greco-Roman Empire centuries earlier than the historical shift seen under Constantine.
📜 Octavian’s victory ensured the foundation of the Roman Empire under his leadership, solidifying the primacy of Western Roman values and the Senate's influence (albeit under an autocrat).

Antony, Cleopatra, and the Clash of Worlds
🐍 Cleopatra VII was a Greek descendant of Ptolemy, navigating the vastly different cultures of Ancient Egypt and the Greco-Roman world; she was a skilled politician who managed to manipulate key Roman figures.
👑 Antony’s alignment with Cleopatra, culminating in his will dividing Roman conquests among their children and Caesarion, was seen by Rome as an insult and a threat to Roman sovereignty.
📢 Octavian skillfully framed the conflict not as a civil war against a Roman, but as a war of "Western Rome against the softness of the Greek East," effectively rallying the Senate and Roman public opinion.

Military Strategy and Outcome
🚢 Despite Antony’s superior experience in land warfare, he chose a naval battle at Actium, a decision heavily questioned by historians, possibly due to the logistical concentration of his fleet intended for an Italian invasion.
🏃 The decisive moment was Cleopatra ordering her 60 ships to retreat toward Egypt around midday, leading a disoriented Antony to abandon the battle and follow her, signaling a surrender.
🧠 Victory is largely attributed to Agrippa, Octavian’s commander, reinforcing the idea that Octavian was a master politician who excelled at choosing brilliant collaborators rather than being a supreme military leader himself.

Key Points & Insights
➡️ Octavian’s success was built on his political ruthlessness and ability to secure top-tier collaborators (like Agrippa), ensuring political stability by preemptively eliminating potential conspirators.
➡️ The testament of Mark Antony, which favored his children with Cleopatra and Caesarion, was the key piece of propaganda used to sway the Senate fully toward Octavian by threatening the loss of Roman sovereignty.
➡️ The narrative surrounding the conflict was heavily shaped by Augustan propaganda, which successfully portrayed Antony as weak and orientalized, cementing Augustus’s image as the perfect, foundational Roman leader, while the romanticized, tragic figures (Antony, Cleopatra) captured the popular imagination.
