Families question: Death toll severely underestimated! Residents' group reports over 330 people!! Three major questions from families! Tai Po, Hung Fuk Court | #CantoneseChannel [#UnfilteredNews] Wong Shui-chiu 12.9

Discrepancies in Casualty Figures
📌 A resident, Ms. E, believes the official death toll of 159 from the Tai Po Hong Fuk Estate fire is significantly underestimated.
😟 Ms. E's parents are missing; only a small piece of bone fragment, potentially her father's, was found, while her mother's body remains missing despite providing dental records and surgical history.
🏘️ Resident group estimates suggest over 330 people are dead or missing, significantly higher than the official 30+ missing figure, as many families might not have reported missing relatives.

Challenges in Identification and Remains Recovery
🔥 The fire's intensity reached temperatures potentially exceeding standard crematoriums, causing severe destruction, with some unit structural components burning through.
🦴 Complete disintegration into ash or bone fragments fused together makes forensic identification extremely difficult, meaning many remains may not be officially counted.
🚶 Escape routes were severely blocked by dense smoke, suggesting many fatalities occurred while attempting to flee in corridors or stairwells, especially in lower floors where body damage was severe.

Criticism of Government Response and Support
🗳️ Ms. E criticized the government for prioritizing the Legislative Council election over disaster relief, noting that civil servants who were also victims were still required to work on election duties, even reporting comments like having to work despite family deaths.
🧑‍💼 The promised "one social worker per household" support was described as fictitious; social workers only appeared following police notification for individual cases, lacking proactive outreach.
😩 The process for claiming assistance is chaotic and overwhelming, requiring multiple trips, long queues, and complex documentation for small aid amounts (e.g., $1000 on a first-come, first-served basis), making victims feel like they are "begging the government."

Key Points & Insights
➡️ Residents urgently request a centralized location for handling all relief procedures to reduce the burden on victims who must travel to multiple locations for documentation and aid.
➡️ The government must provide a transparent accounting for the discrepancy between the official figures and the estimated number of casualties reported by affected residents.
➡️ The current assistance application process, requiring complex financial documentation for minor aid, is inaccessible and demeaning to disaster victims.
