Grade 10 SCIENCE | Quarter 3 Module 1 | Hormones in the Reproductive System

Human Reproductive System Overview
📌 The reproductive system, or genital system, is the biological system responsible for sexual reproduction in humans, divided into male and female components.
♂️ The male reproductive system produces sperm cells (male gametes) and transfers them to the female.
♀️ The female reproductive system produces egg cells (ova), receives male gametes, and carries the baby through development if fertilization occurs.

Male Reproductive System Components and Functions
📌 External structures include the penis (deposits sperm) and the scrotum, which regulates testicular temperature to the optimal 35°C for sperm viability.
🧪 Internal structures include the vas deferens (transports mature sperm), the urethra (passageway for urine and semen), and glands like the seminal vesicle, which produces fructose to nourish sperm.
💧 The Cowper's gland (bulbourethral gland) produces lubricating fluid to neutralize urethral acidity, ensuring sperm survival.

Female Reproductive System Components and Functions
📌 The ovary is the site of oogenesis (egg cell production) and produces the hormones estrogen and progesterone.
🥚 The fimbriae catch the ovum from the ovary, and the fallopian tube (oviduct) is the site where fertilization typically occurs.
👶 The uterus is the site of egg implantation; its lining, the endometrium, nourishes the embryo and sheds during menstruation if fertilization does not occur.

Hormonal Control and the Endocrine System
📌 Hormones are chemical messengers maintaining homeostasis (balance), produced by glands within the endocrine system.
👑 The pituitary gland is called the "master gland" as it directs the functions of other endocrine glands by sending hormones like FSH and LH.
🔗 In males, FSH signals sperm production, and LH stimulates testosterone production, which regulates male characteristics and spermatogenesis.
🌸 In females, FSH signals egg cell development, while LH stimulates the production of estradiol (estrogen) and progesterone by the ovaries.

Key Points & Insights
➡️ The scrotum is vital for sperm viability as it maintains the testes at an optimal temperature of 35°C.
➡️ Male reproductive fluids (from seminal vesicles and prostate) provide nourishment (fructose) and lubrication/neutralization necessary for sperm motility and survival.
➡️ Female reproductive organs (ovaries) are part of the endocrine system, producing key hormones like estrogen and progesterone, essential for female characteristics.
➡️ For females, only about 400 egg cells mature out of an initial 400,000 between puberty (around age 12) and menopause (around age 50).
