Part 107 Remote Pilot RISK MANAGEMENT & CRM | Study Guide Pt 8 of 12

Pilot Performance & Physiological Factors
🧠 Physiological factors significantly impact remote pilot performance, affecting reaction time and decision-making due to conditions like fatigue, stress, hyperventilation, and dehydration.
⚠️ Hyperventilation (rapid breathing reducing blood CO2) can cause dizziness, blurred vision, and poor decision-making; breathe slowly into a paper bag to mitigate.
💧 Dehydration impairs concentration and mental clarity; even mild cases affect cognitive functions, making consistent hydration crucial during long operations.
👁️ Visual acuity is paramount for remote pilots to track drones, assess surroundings, and avoid obstacles; use corrective lenses, avoid poor lighting, and take visual breaks to maintain sharpness.

Inflight Emergency Procedures
🚨 For loss of control, immediately check drone response, gradually reduce speed and altitude, and utilize the return-to-home feature to regain control.
🚫 To prevent a FlyAway, ensure a strong GPS signal, calibrate compass and IMU regularly, conduct a pre-flight operational analysis for interference, and verify return-to-home settings.
🔋 In case of battery failure, prioritize flying the drone back to its home point via the fastest, most direct route, while closely monitoring the battery indicator for an emergency landing.
⛈️ For unexpected weather changes, immediately reduce the drone's altitude as drones fly better at lower altitudes, then make appropriate emergency management decisions.

Aeronautical Decision-Making (ADM) & Hazardous Attitudes
🧠 Aeronautical Decision-Making (ADM) is the process of making safe and effective choices while operating an aircraft or drone, involving assessing risks and anticipating problems to reduce accident chances.
🚫 Recognize and counteract the five hazardous attitudes (anti-authority, impulsivity, invulnerability, macho, resignation) that lead to poor decisions; for example, impulsivity (acting without thinking) can lead to unsafe operations, requiring pilots to slow down and think before acting.
🚦 Anti-authority attitudes, such as ignoring rules and procedures, are hazardous and can lead to reckless flying and FAA violations; always follow rules and regulations.

Risk Management & Situational Awareness
🔎 Risk management involves identifying, assessing, and minimizing potential hazards before and during flight to prevent costly accidents, FAA violations, and ensure safety.
✔️ Implement the four key steps of risk management: identify the hazard, assess the risk, mitigate the risk (e.g., check weather, use pre-flight checklist, carry spare battery), and make a decision and monitor the situation.
📡 Situational awareness is the ability to perceive, understand, and anticipate environmental factors during flight, enabling informed decisions and quick responses to emergencies.

Key Points & Insights
➡️ Prioritize physiological well-being as it directly impacts your ability to operate a drone safely and make critical decisions.
➡️ Thorough pre-flight preparations are essential, as most emergencies like FlyAways can be prevented by ensuring strong GPS, proper calibrations, and verifying RTH settings.
➡️ Proactive risk management is crucial; always anticipate potential problems and implement mitigation strategies before and during flight.
➡️ Continuously develop situational awareness through flight experience to better perceive hazards and make timely, informed decisions.
